  Ethylene oxide glycol ethers are extremely good solvents because they have a bifunctional nature (ether-alcohol). They are often used as coupling agents in applications such as water-based paints due to their miscibility with both polar and non-polar substances. Shell chemicals companies produce ethylene oxide glycol butyl ethers that are sold under the trade name OXITOL*. Butyl OXITOL is the Shell Chemicals name for ethylene oxide glycol monobutyl ether (also known as EB or EGBE). Butyl DIOXITOL* is the Shell Chemicals brand of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DB or DGBE).
