  Petroleum ether, also known as petroleum essence, is a light petroleum product. It is a mixture of low relative molecular mass hydrocarbons (mainly pentane and hexane). It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a kerosene odor. The density is about 0.63 to 0.66 g/mL, showing weak polarity, and is often mixed with strong polar organic solvents, insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and oil.
