  Effectiveness and applications: It can maintain normal osmotic pressure of blood vessels, decrease the brittleness of blood vessels and shorten bleeding time. In clinical application, it is frequently applied as adjuvant and anastaltic to cure high blood pressure. It can enhance the effects of Vitamin C, and have antivirus action.
  
  
  Hesperidin is a flavanone glycoside (flavonoid) found abundantly in citrus fruits. Its aglycone form is called hesperetin. Its name is derived from the Hesperides nymphs of Greek mythology. Hesperidin is believed to play a role in plant defense. It acts as an antioxidant according to in vitro studies. In human nutrition, it contributes to the integrity of the blood vessels.[citation needed]
  
  Various preliminary studies reveal novel pharmaceutical properties. Hesperidin reduced cholesterol and blood pressurein rats. In a mouse study, large doses of the glucoside hesperidin decreased bone density loss. Another animal study showed protective effects against sepsis. Hesperidin has anti-inflammatory effects.Hesperidin is also a potential sedative, possibly acting through opioid or adenosine receptors.
  
  Some in vitro results applied only to the aglycone form. Hesperidin also showed the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier in an in vitro model.
